New adidas Consortium Saturday 2.27.16
Besides their seasonal collections, the brand has built a solid reputation through their highly conceptual product collaborations over the years. In preparation for this project with adidas Consortium, Wood Wood signed up for an advanced astrophysics lecture centered around a major discovery in 2014. That year, scientists announced what they believed to be the indirect detection of gravitational waves in the afterglow of the Big Bang. As the last untested prediction of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, finding gravitational waves proved to be quite a big deal... Besides its groundbreaking scientific importance, an early depiction of this pattern – line segments intersected by shaded areas of orange and blue – turned out to deliver a visually striking design. Wood Wood incorporated elements of this chart into the design of their UltraBOOST. Alternating blue and orange color highlights are found throughout the shoes – as inserts on the midsoles, color-markings on the Torsion sole elements, heel straps and extra set of laces.
Wood Wood's research into astrophysics served as an initial spark for this project and even though they took to challenging heights with their conceptual approach, the resulting designs of both of their UltraBOOSTs stayed down-to-earth and quintessentially wearable. The subtle, technical detailing complements the innovative core of the adidas Primeknit UltraBOOST and attests to Wood Wood's experienced design sense.

adidas Consortium – First Women’s Collection
Since the relaunch of adidas’ top tier Consortium line last year, there has been a natural demand for women’s product with comparable quality materials and detailing. To respond to these requests, adidas Originals has joined forces with two Scandinavian retailers, WOOD WOOD and Sneakersnstuff, to create the first capsule collection designed specifically for women within the Consortium range.
ZX 700 x Sneakersnstuff
Swedish retailer Sneakersnstuff has given adidas’ ZX 700 a directional fashion twist. The SNS design team took inspiration from the exotic animal textures and luxurious materials that are often used in the construction of designer handbags. The ZX 700 x Sneakersnstuff upper is a mix of black suede and animal embossed leather. The snakeskin pattern effect varies, making each pair of these head-turning sneakers unique. The team further pushed feminine detailing by focusing on the 3-Stripes on the medial side of the shoe. Instead of being stitched, the 3-Stripe detailing is pleated – a considered approach that adds to the sneaker’s feminine look. The predominately black colorway is counteracted by off-white on the leather ghillie piece and outsole, and a luxe soft leather sockliner featuring the SNS logo. The logo is also debossed on one shoe’s heel tab, while the other shoe features a debossed Trefoil.
Gazelle Vintage x WOOD WOOD
Danish clothing label and retailer WOOD WOOD revisits its relationship with adidas Originals for this Consortium collaboration. The brand has reworked the Gazelle Vintage, infusing the silhouette with a Scandinavian sensibility that draws additional inspiration from the Californian desert. Bringing the quality of Consortium into focus, WOOD WOOD has taken away the overlay of the silhouette and worked with an all-leather construction on the upper that is super smooth. A handcrafted feel comes forth with hand-stitching on the 3-Stripes and heel tab and cotton laces. Raw edging around the collar makes for a sneaker that is both rustic and feminine. More thoughtful detail is found throughout the sneaker design, including a cork sockliner featuring a screenprinted Trefoil under one foot and the WOOD WOOD logo screened onto the other. A fabric loop tag hangs off the heel with a unique swallowtail finish. Like all Consortium models, a signature fabric loop tag with eyelet wraps around the tongue.
Basket Profi
adidas Originals reintroduced the Basket Profi earlier this year, and is giving the shoe a fashion look and feel as part of the women’s Consortium capsule collection. From a distance, the shoe’s fluid shape and mostly off-white colorway present a minimal style, but closer inspection reveals a more nuanced design. The leather upper has been given a cracked treatment, and a contrast heel tab and lining of super soft suede is screenprinted with irregular polka dots. The sneaker’s serrated edge 3-Stripes detail is executed in premium nubuck for subtle contrast. The Basket Profi’s honey colored outsole matches the original sneaker, and the fabric loop tag on the tongue defines the shoe as part of the Consortium collection. The loop is marked with an off-white Trefoil on the front, and the Consortium handshake logo in black on the back, further pushing the detail-oriented direction of this collection.

The design team utilized Nike Running’s innovative Lunarlite material with Dynamic Support technology to provide an extremely lightweight cushioning system with maximum traction. Jesse Leyva, Nike Sportswear Footwear Design Director adds “For the upper, we took design cues from the original Wildwood Trail shoe and employed a rubberized mudguard along with ripstop nylon to keep feet protected despite harsh outdoor conditions.”
Taking inspiration from Scandinavia’s harsh winter weather, designers at Wood Wood and Nike wanted to make this versatile running shoe that combines ultimate protection with an amazing street-friendly look. “We worked with the Nike design team on color selection, material variations and unique graphics to provide winterized protection against the elements. Whereas the original Nike Wildwood was made mostly for the purpose of running in nature, this project is more about the city. We wanted to bring the shoe into an urban environment. The Lunar Wood TZ is made for the cold and wet Scandinavian nights. Inspiration comes from the world of graffiti and going on these nocturnal expeditions, the empty streets, tunnels, abandoned buildings, and jumping fences,’’ said Brian SS Jensen at Wood Wood alive. The shoe has been beautifully curated with some creative design details. The shoe tongue embroiders Nike Wildwood’s ACG triangle logo with a crescent moon to keep the outdoor spirit. The bright yellow signature “W.W.” is boldly placed only on the left shoe heel. A unique graphic of full moon to eclipse sits on the sockliners.
To further keep feet warm and dry, P2i, Ltd.’s Ionmask™ technology was added by applying a nanoscopic protective polymer layer to the whole shoe, which allows water to form beads and simply roll off, instead of being fully absorbed into the shoe. Ionmask™ gives the shoe, stitching included, a superior water repellence. Shoes dry out quickly and won’t get heavier over time, while maintaining the natural airflow of their constructed material.
