adidas Originals x UNDFTD x BAPE
BAPE and UNDFTD have been working with adidas originals on opposite sides of the world since the respective launches of both seminal streetwear brands. with unique perspectives - largely shaped by their home cities of Tokyo and Los Angeles - the merging of the two streetwear heavyweights for adidas has them creating shoes for Consortium, continuing the growth of a partnership that has already spawned some classic pieces. The union brings a strong army influence done using BAPE's signature camouflage print, blocks of khaki, taupe and off white, the occasional splash of bright colour, and special gold leaf detailing on suede – a rare execution. Two favourite adidas styles have been given the midas touch: the Campus and ZX 5000. As always for Consortium, premium materials are used throughout, such as super soft leather and suede.
ZX5000 - UNDFTDxBAPE
The ZX 5000 was technically ahead of the game upon its release in the mid ‘80s, and now adidas Originals is bringing it back, giving the silhouette to two streetwear specialists, BAPE and UNDFTD, to design their own version for Consortium. The labels pay homage to the camouflage trend using BAPE’s signature camo print throughout. The suede print is predominant on the upper and tongue, with colour blocks of khaki and taupe on the toe box and side panel and a khaki lace jewel. Technical details that were inherent to the original also appear on this version, too: an extended plastic wrap-around heel counter and a Torsion bar that can be seen in red on the outsole of the shoe. Interestingly, the serrated 3-stripes have been treated with leather in bright colours: blue, white and red, which pop against the upper. gold foiling makes the shoe extra special with each brand’s logo stamped on the heel tab – BAPE on one foot and UNDFTD on the other.
CAMPUS 80’s - UNDFTDxBAPE
From the courts to the streets, the Campus has been one of the most cherished silhouettes in adidas’ back catalogue since its initial release in the 1970s. This time, streetwear specialists BAPE and UNDFTD take over the reigns to create a version of the Campus sneaker for adidas Originals Consortium collection, taking cues from the army battlefields with camouflage prints and khaki tones throughout. The black version comes in a suede upper featuring serrated 3-stripes on the side panel, along with tonal black laces and a premium leather heel tab. A gold leafing UNDFTD/BAPE callout sits vertically over the first stripe, while further gold leafing is used to emboss each brand’s logo on the heel tab - BAPE’s is on the right shoe and UNDFTD on the left. Running throughout the collection is a signature BAPE camouflage print and on this shoe it is used on the tongue and sockliner. A fabric loop tag sits on the tongue featuring a khaki Trefoil on the front and a Consortium handshake logo on the back, while a white vulcanised rubber outsole completes this simple, refined shoe.

ZX 500 X Shaniqwa Jarvis

ZX 500 Before |
Personal memories are infused into the ZX 500 designed by photographer Shaniqwa Jarvis, who as a child was a swim team member training for the Junior Olympics. The upper is predominately swimming pool blue in a premium suede finish, partly perforated to add texture with a brown suede heel tab to reflect Jarvis' local pool, including the wall tiles and lane dividers. A set of laces accompany the sneakers with dip dye effect ends, inspired by the lane dividers in bright contrasting colors. The vintage silhouette is given a modern twist with the neoprene tongue, while the white and blue midsole remain true to its sports heritage. Shaniqwa's autograph is tucked away on the inside of the tongue's fabric loop tag.

Decade Hi X Stefan Glerum

Decade Hi Before |
Illustrator Stefan Glerum represents Amsterdam with his rendition of the Decade Hi for Consortium SS12 and his own tongue-in-cheek approach is evident. At first glance the exterior reveals a fairly subdued sneaker with a navy and white colour-way and a pop of red around the ankle collar. The upper is a combination of nylon and soft leather giving it added texture while the three crosses on the tongue are inspired by the Amsterdam city flag. Bringing some humour to the sneakers are Glerum's tucked away illustrations. The outsole features part of a drawing of a fuller-figured woman pole-vaulting, while the sockliner is a full version of the image capturing her in the amusing moment.

BC X adidas Originals

BC Before |
adidas Originals has created the tenth shoe of the collection to celebrate their 20th year of involvement with the Olympics and an understated sneaker has emerged in the form of a BC silhouette. Inspiration is taken from the original Olympia with a simple black and white colour-way and tongue construction. Additionally, this version features Olympic ring inspired lace tips. With Consortium's select materials, the shoe feels instantly premium, but what makes this BC MMXII ultra special are the 20 sockliners that have been created marking 20 Olympic years with adidas, with images of key performance silhouettes from each year. Every pair will be assigned two random liners out of the selection.

New in Store Saturday 5.19.12
New Adidas Consortium in Store Saturday 5.19.12.
When Adidas Originals brought Consortium back for FW11, the slate was wiped clean giving a fresh start to the premium range. It also paved the way for the next collection as they invited creative partners to fill in the canvas.
With the whole globe turning its focus on the Olympics, the partners were asked to take inspiration from their own Olympic memories from the past, and translate these for the Consortium SS12 collection. The designers were chosen from Olympic cities around the world, from Tokyo to Amsterdam, and each told their story using a silhouette selected from the Consortium FW11 collection.
Consortium SS12 is as diverse as the cultures engaged with the Olympics itself. Each sneaker’s Consortium loop tag features an Olympic coloured eyelet on the inside of the tongue, tying the collection together harmoniously.
Consortium's next installment promises to bring a diverse offering to its followers, whilst maintaining the impeccable quality and attention to detail that it's known for.
Drop One:
ZX 500 x Quote
Berlin native and sneaker collector Quote is passionate about the ZX 500 running silhouette and brings his enthusiasm to the table to design his own version for Consortium 2012. This version remains loyal to the '80s original using a mix of nylon and mesh throughout. Quote's muted colour-way is directly influenced by the blue and white track of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, where his favourite football team are based and a place he spends a lot of his time in, with the pertinent Olympic colours thrown in on the outsole. On the inside of the tongue's fabric loop tag sits a fist tattooed with Quote's namesake.
Matchplay x J. Thompson
Such an understated sneaker like the Matchplay needs to be treated with finesse and Jim Thompson of Sydney label Three Over One has done just that, sticking to his uncomplicated design aesthetic. Thompson's own style is heavily influenced by the past; from the worn-in workmanship right down to the attitude and it's all evident in his interpretation of the Matchplay for Consortium SS12. Thompson looked back to the adidas archives of track and field shoes from the '30s as inspiration, and has used very subtle waxed leather on most of the upper which gives it a vintage look. A matching pigskin suede toebox shows impeccable attention to detail while the lack of lining gives it a handcrafted feel.
Pro Shell X DJ Muro
DJ Muro has partnered up with adidas Originals to create a bold and, as he describes it, 'aggressive' version of the Pro Shell with its strong and deep colour choices of dark green, black and pops of red. Overall, Muro's Pro Shell is understated, but bursts of detail are found throughout, like the jersey material covering the ankle padding that features engineered stripes reminiscent of a track top's cuff. Additionally, Muro's modus operandi can be found on the laces, snakeskin-effect is used on the 3-stripes and unfastening of the velcro reveals bright colours underneath. A Muro skull and crossbones logo sits on the heel for a tough looking street shoe that represents Tokyo for Consortium SS12.
